La caratteristica principale di questo coltello è appunto la lama “tronca”o “mozza” in virtù della legge del 1908 emanata da Giolitti che condizionava il diritto di portare in tasca un coltello all’esistenza di un motivo legittimo e sostenibile. Inoltre fissò a soli quattro centimetri la lunghezza della lama dei coltelli con la punta. Per le mozzette il limite saliva a dieci centimetri,per questo motivo in quegli anni ci fu un enorme diffusione di questo modello che veniva identificato come”permesso dalla legge”.

The distinctive feature of this regional knife is its sheepsfoot or "mozza" blade, in accordance with the 1908 law enacted by Italian statesman Giovanni Giolitti, which conditioned one's right to carry a knife in the pocket on the existence of a legitimate and tenable reason. This law also established a limit of no more than four centimetres for the blade length of knives with pointed blades. The limit was extended to ten centimetres for sheepsfoot knives and this was the reason for the huge spread of these knives in those years since they were classified as "legal".
