A knife as a token of love
The knife is a tool that readily takes on the symbolic values of the social and cultural environment in which it is crafted and used, and the love knife plays a major role in this respect. Popular in the past centuries in various parts of central and southern Italy as a gift between lovers, the main purpose of this historic knife was to seal the bond of love, relegating practical functionality to a secondary role. Decorative and symbolic elements were of great importance: chained hearts, doves, flower sprays, initials of the beloved, the two lovers holding hands, and even engraved phrases such as "Non ti fidar di me se il cuor ti manca, lo mio amore l'ha nome Battista me lo ripiego e me lo metto in tasca pe facci l'amor e un esse vista" (trust me not if your love is wanting, my lover’s name is Battista, I close and pocket it to make love with him unseen). In certain cases, these knives were also given as protective amulets against the evil eye, perhaps induced against the betrothed by the envy of the other unwed maidens. This function found expression in the handle inlays, often in ivory, which depicted the eye of the beloved, watching over and protecting his bride. There are various shapes and sizes that vary depending on who was receiving it: if it was a woman, the knife's decorative and symbolic aspects prevailed, and typically the blade would be shorter than usual and could not be secured in the open position. When the woman gave a knife to her man, it could be interpreted as an exhortation to virility and a manifestation of the lover's protective spirit; she would not merely dedicate it with a love symbol engraving, but the woman would be sure to provide her beloved with a very effective instrument with which to face moments when life could be at stake.
