"Genovese" – The Historic Genoese Knife

The historic Genoese folding knife has a handle made of fine buffalo horn and bolster facets that make it inimitable, it has a sturdy build and its brushed c70 steel blade measures 13.3 cm.

The historic Genoese knife

In the 1600s and 1700s, but even earlier, Genoa was at the forefront of the production and trading of forbidden bladed weapons. Indded, these Genoese knives had deadly blades, similar to stilettos, and they were banned by the government of the Republic and many of the former Italian states. There was a time when the knifemaker's guild, founded in Genoa in 1262, had up to 329 members. There was a knifemakers' wharf at the end of Via San Lorenzo, there was a knifemakers' "escarpment" and they had a "loggia" teeming with shops where blades were sharpened and made using steel from inland ironworks, which in turn were supplied with iron ore from Elba. We can assume that there was no Genoese commoner or nobleman who did not possess a typical stiletto knife, tucked into his trousers, or concealed inside another apparently harmless weapon with a rounded tip, perhaps disguised as a tool for sewing sails. The Genoese knife was the "sword of the people", the weapon of assassins long before guns. The statue of the Virgin, first erected in 1654, was teetering at one point and when it was removed, knives were found wedged under two tonnes of marble. They had been left as a votive offering by 17th-century workers.
