Maremmano Nazzareno Historic Knife
The historic Maremmano Nazzaremo folding knife is made of fine buffalo horn, the handle has linear engravings and the brushed c70 steel blade bears engraved inscriptions. Closure is traditional with simple spring-assisted movement.
The historic Maremma knife
The historic Maremma knife is also commonly called "il Maremmano di Pescecane" in honour of its owner, a certain Angelo Pelliccia, nicknamed "Pescecane" ("The Shark"). Born in Tuoro in the province of Perugia, at the time of his arrest in Grosseto he had already spent several years in prison for violent thefts. The lockable knife was found at the home of the Pescecane's brother-in-law, Giovanni Del Gobbo, following a search by the guards who were looking for Pelliccia, who had failed to show up at the police station. They found Maremmano Nazzaremo and accused Pelliccia of carrying the knife. He was exonerated by Del Gobbo and other women who also lived in the house but was nevertheless sentenced to a further two years' imprisonment for failing to appear before the Public Safety Delegate as a convicted criminal. At this point, possession of the knife no longer constituted a criminal offence, so it was not destroyed, but filed together with the records of the trial, all of which are still preserved in the Florence state archives. This historical knife was made in Scarperia by Gustavo Buffi in 1871. The "Nazzareno" inscription on the blade probably revealed a religious vocation.
